The Muktinath Valley, located at an elevation of 3710 metres in the foothills of the Himalayas, is one the most serene places in the world. Many people book Muktinath tour packages to pay homage at the sacred Muktinath Temple. It is revered by both the Hindus and Buddhists. The local name for this place is Chumig Gyatsa, which means hundred waters. As per tell-a-tales, it is home to many female deities and Dakinis – the enlightened goddesses. This shrine features beautiful idols of Lord Vishnu, Garuda, Lava-Kusha, Goddess Saraswati and Janaki. It is the 105th of the 108 Sri Vaishnava Divya Desams, and it is believed that the water coming out from Muktidhara represents holy water coming from all these sacred spots.

Shakti Peetha

With Muktinath tour packages, tourists get a chance to visit one of the 51 Shakti Peethas – the seats of Shakti. There are 51 such seats with an interesting story behind their creation. As per mythological tales, Lord Shiva started his Tandava, after self immolation of his spouse Sati. To stop this celestial dance of destruction and grab attraction of Lord Shiva, Lord Vishnu used the Sudarshana Chakra, which cut through the corpse of Sati into 51 pieces, and a holy seat was established wherever they fell. In every seat, there is one idol of Shakti and Bhairava each. At this temple, her idol is referred to as Gandaki Chandi and the one of Bhairava as Chakrapani.

Apart from its narration in Vishnu Purana and Gandaki Mahathi, this place is also mentioned in the holy books of Buddhism. Padmasambhava  – the founder of Tibetan Buddhism – meditated at this place on his way to Tibet. After paying homage to the Hindu gods, travellers can also visit Mharme Lhakhang Gompa with tour packages to Muktinath. The name of this monastery translates to thousand holy lamps. It is dedicated to Padmasambhava, and features his huge image in the centre of altar with Trakpo and Singe Doma. Apart from these spiritual centres, travellers can explore the beautiful valley and spend some quality time amidst nature in its serene ambience.
