A noted festival of the region called Gomphu Kora is held in the month of March every year. This three-day long festivity is attended by a number of people, and it also draws a large number of pilgrims from the Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh. In local parlance, the word Gomphu means meditation cave and Kora implies Circumambulation. According to legends, Myongkhapa – an evil spirit, came to this place after escaping from Tibet. He hid himself in a huge rock, next to which Gomphu Kora is located at present. A guru named Padmasambhava followed this spirit here, meditated inside a rock cave for three days and then destroyed the demon. Each year, this celebration is held to commemorate the victory of the guru or in other words the triumph of good over evil.

Around the 10th century, a temple was built close to this sacred site. Over the centuries, many renovations have been made to the original structure, which includes mural inscriptions on the walls made by the founder of Trongsa Dzong – Yongzin Ngagi Wangchuk. People, dressed in opulent clothes, from the different parts of the country come here to worship and participate in the festivity. The tribal people of Arunachal Pradesh travel for days through tough terrains to reach this site. To partake in such celebrations as well as to explore other facets of the nation, tourists can avail Bhutan tour packages.
